Time to get in shape and raise money for charity.

Happy New Year – 2018 Fitness Challenge.  We hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year.  Many people over indulge at Christmas so January always feels like a great time to get in shape. Our get into shape pledge is for the staff at York Guns  to climb a mountain and raise money for charity.  We have varying levels of fitness and ages so we are currently deciding on which one we should do.

I’ve put together a Top 5, please help us choose or add your own suggestions.

Ben Nevis, Lochaber, Scotland

The Ben’ as it’s affectionately named locally is the tallest mountain test you can take on in the UK. Near the small town of Fort William, Ben Nevis understandably attracts a lot of tourists. Most walkers tackle the ‘easier’ Mountain Track up the mountain, starting at Glen Nevis. Which I’m assuming York Guns staff would take.  For the more experienced climbers the North Face (one of the highest cliff in UK) route is more challenging.

The summit of Ben Nevis is approximately 1345m above sea level. Height: 1345m

Yorkshire Three Peaks

Three Peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside. This is a major challenge walk which is long and involves over 1600m (5000 feet) of climbing over the Three Peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. There is one section on road, but the paths are good. The ability to be able to navigate and cope with conditions in the high fells is a must.

This challenge is a 24 mile walk/climb and should be completed in 12 hours or less.

Helvellyn, Lake District, England

Helvellyn is a mountain in the English Lake District, the highest point of the Helvellyn range, a north-south line of mountains to the north of Ambleside, between the lakes of Thirlmere and Ullswater.

This would be a challenging climb as the terrain is very steep, exposed knife edge.  Distance 8.7 miles.

Snowdon, Snowdonia , Wales

Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa in Welsh) is the highest mountain in Wales. However you recognise this famous landmark, it is well worth a visit. Standing tall over the village of Llanberis, Snowdon is a part of a close-knit family of jagged peaks and can offer views of Snowdonia, Anglesey, Pembrokeshire and Ireland. Choose from six different paths to conquer this 1085 metre giant: The Llanberis Path, PYG Track, Miners’ Track, Watkin Path, Rhyd-Ddu Path or the Snowdon Ranger Path.

Scafell Pike, Lake District, England

Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in England, at an elevation of 978 metres above sea level. It is located in the Lake District National Park, in Cumbria, and is part of the Southern Fells.

There are various routes ranging from 10 to 16 miles.

So there you have it,  which mountain should the York Guns team climb? Bearing in mind the age range is 17 to 50 years and ability novice to experienced. We’d like to raise money for charity so please get in touch with a worthy cause.

Finally, if you have any good practice walks we’d loved to hear your suggestions.
